House Moving Made Easy [Problems to Avoid]

Moving to your new home can be both an incredibly happy time but it can also be the most stressful time you have in your life!  Packing up your current home is voted as one of the single-worst parts about moving.  Our ‘House Moving Made Easy guide’ will help you beat the most common battles encountered when moving home.

Please see our list below of our famous move battles:

  • We believe the worst items to move, unsurprisingly are wardrobes.  Most wardrobes are now purchased flat packed so when your move date arrives one of the most stressful issues are when your wardrobe do not fit through your door in one piece.  This means time is then wasted dismantling your wardrobe and then reassembling in your new home.
  • The second worst item to move is the American Fridge.  Similar to the wardrobes this item normally has the doors fitted once in situ, which means on removal date again the item does not fit through your doors.  People also forget that some models of American Fridges’ are also connected to the mains water for the drinks and ice machine, again this can cause a problem on move date.
  • The third worst item to move is your sofa.  The key issue with this item is firstly the sofa feet are sometimes fitted once in situ but the most common problem that we experience is the choice of new property.  When people have purchased their new home moving the furniture they currently have is a second thought, therefore on move date we sometimes experience a battle to get the client’s sofa through the doors or hallways of their new home.  We have had occasion where a client has had to remove their lounge window to get their sofa into their new house!
  • Our next worst item to move are the super king size beds.  They look fantastic in the showroom but when you come to move them in the future they always cause some battles on the new property stairs and landings.
  • The next come battle we experience is the badly packed box.  In the first instance we always suggest to all our clients that they purchase good sturdy boxes and not to use the ‘crisp’ type boxes from the supermarket.  We always suggest to tape the bottom of each box well and don’t over pack them.  If you can lift your box yourself comfortable then that is a good bench mark that it is under weight.  The other issues we experience with boxes are when they are packed with opened liquid bottles like cooking oil, washing fabric, vinegar etc.  We have had projects where items like these have leaked and gone through the box onto other household items.
  • After you have prepared well and on the day of your move your removal company are ready and loaded the next common battle is that of the ‘unprepared previous resident’.  This battle is when you arrive at your new home to find the current owner is not finished pack or even started to clean your new home. There are professionals you can hire to help you clean your space and you can follow this link here for more information
  • Battle of the plants, this is a common problem when moving some clients do love to take every plant that they have in both the garden and house.  Our team totally appreciate that both the plants and also their pots are very expensive so it is naturally when moving that you would like to take these items with you.  Our advice is to try and not water the plants that you would like to take with you on the day of removal.  The reason for this is that once in the removal van the water starts to come out of the bottom of the pot and onto the van floor and other items in the van.  On projects with lots of plants we try to separate these items onto another van to avoid any damage to other items.
  • Battle of the washing machine, this is also a very popular item forgotten about on day of removal.  We have arrived on removal projects whereby the client still has a wash going in the machine!  We always suggest that you stop using your washing machine 48 hours before your move, fully disconnect the item and allow all excess water to drain.  What this will then avoid is water leaking into the removal van (and over your items) when we complete your move.
  • Delicate items are also an important factor when moving.  We tell all our clients that if they have any items of value that can break to keep them separate from their main boxed items and mark them as fragile.
  • Battle for the remote, our team always has a laugh about this subject. Just imagine you have moved into your new home, you have boxes still everywhere but its time to call it a day and just relax.  I cannot tell you how many calls we have received on move date by clients asking if we can remember if we saw the TV or Sky remote.  Our tip is to place these in a bag and carry the items with you.

We hope our ‘Home Moving Made Easy’ guide as helped you to understand what lies ahead when you look to move yourself.  We feel the best option to avoid the moving battles is to start your preparation early and to take a look into each room in your home and see what items could be a problem. If you are unsure some furniture items will not fit through your doors get a measuring tape and check the height and width of your furniture and door if you are still unsure after this then its probably best to look at  disassembling to avoid any damage.
